The Endless Mountains Through the Seasons

Spring

The mountains are coming back to life—all the better to head outside! The waterfalls are flowing thanks to the April showers, and the popular Falls Trail at Ricketts Glen State Park typically reopens once the snow and ice melt away. April also marks the return of trout season along scenic, stocked waters like the Loyalsock Creek and South Branch Tunkhannock Creek. For the ultimate views, wander through over 500,000 tulips at Brown Hill Farms in Tunkhannock.

Summer

Every single weekend boasts some sort of fair or festival! From the outhouse races at Dushore Founder’s Day to rhythms of the NEPA Bluegrass Festival, you’ll experience a little slice of small-town Americana. For a more relaxed pace, stroll through a farmers market or take a kayaking trip on the Susquehanna River (Endless Mountain Outfitters and Susquehanna Kayak & Canoe Rentals can help with gear rentals). 

Fall

With the cooler temperatures and a hint of autumn magic in the air, it’s easy to see why fall is many people’s favorite season in the mountains. Outdoor fun still abounds, especially when the fall foliage reaches its peak in early to mid-October. High Knob Overlook and the Loyalsock Canyon Vista are excellent leaf peeping spots. The harvest season also brings visits to the pumpkin patch and fun events like the popular Sullivan County Fall Festival & Lumberjack/Chainsaw Carving Competition. 

Winter

The season kicks off the plenty of Christmas cheer, from the dazzling Festival of Lights at Stone Hedge Golf Course to the free 12 Movies of Christmas Festival at the Dietrich Theater. Towns like Dushore, Factoryville, and Tunkhannock host holiday celebrations for the entire family. As the season progresses, we welcome the snow and cold for winter sports like skiing at Elk Mountain, ice fishing at Lake Jean, and wild rides down the famous Eagles Mere Toboggan Slide.
