Why people come

Brookgreen Gardens blends art, history, and nature on a former rice plantation, featuring 2,000+ sculptures, botanical gardens, a Lowcountry Zoo, and seasonal events for all ages.

More Than You Can Imagine – Brookgreen Gardens

In the heart of South Carolina's Lowcountry lies Brookgreen Gardens, a hidden gem that offers a unique blend of art, history, and natural beauty. Established in 1931 on the site of a former rice plantation, this breathtaking 9,100-acre property is more than just a garden—it's a living museum that delights visitors of all ages.

What makes Brookgreen Gardens truly special is its combination of sculpture, botanical gardens, and wildlife. With over 2,000 works of American figurative sculpture displayed throughout its grounds, Brookgreen is the largest and most significant collection of American figurative sculpture in the United States. As you stroll through the expansive gardens, you'll encounter breathtaking pieces of art that harmonize with the surrounding greenery and water features.

The garden’s botanical diversity is equally impressive, with themed areas including the tranquil Palmetto Garden and the vibrant Children’s Garden. Every season offers something new, vibrant azaleas in the spring, lush camellias in winter, roses in fall, and a stunning display of caladium in summer. Brookgreen’s new addition, the Purdy Welcome Center and Conservatory Gardens, features seasonal displays and a blooming wall of orchids!

For nature lovers, Brookgreen also boasts a Lowcountry Zoo, home to native wildlife such as alligators, otters, and eagles. The zoo provides an opportunity to see these animals up close while learning about their habitats and conservation.

Beyond its stunning landscapes and wildlife, Brookgreen Gardens hosts a variety of events year-round, including garden tours, educational programs, and seasonal festivals. The renowned "Nights of a Thousand Candles" holiday event transforms the gardens into a glowing wonderland in December.

Whether you're an art enthusiast, nature lover, or just seeking a peaceful retreat, Brookgreen Gardens offers something for everyone. It’s a must-visit destination that blends the best of the natural world with artistic and cultural treasures.
