The Bonneville Lock and Dam visitor center is a wonderful way to see and learn more about the river, salmon and the dam. It's a large facility and there is a lot to see. It's very impressive and you can see the fish ladders and was the salmon navigate the ladders. Great way to spend several educational hours and stretch your legs. There is no cost for admission.
Great place for the family and little ones to see just how the dam works. Another bonus is it costs nothing but gas to go through and tour the dam and viewing room. Fun experience watching the fish jump the ladders, going to the viewing room to see all the different types of fish that swim through the dam. The front desk was very polite and knowledgeable and genuinely excited to talk about it with us. Clean, well kept and beautiful scenic drive along the way. Another PNW must...
Came to visit the dam to see my husband's uncle's paintings. Everyone was very accommodating to show us his art work and let us take pictures. Lee was a talented artist for sure.
Fun place to visit and learn some interesting facts about the dam and its expansion years ago. Was surprised to learn about the town that was moved and the channel cut to expand the dam. There were almost no personnel around and the building from top to bottom is in need of significant TLC. A lot of basic stuff like dusting, spider web removal, window cleaning etc are not being done and haven't been done for a long time. This place could be so much more.
Nice facility, very clean. Lots of history and great education. The best time to see the fish, is during the salmon run. Nice educational theater that plays the same movie over. A good interactive area, including an interactive mini house that informs you of energy saving tips. This would be a great field trip. Lots of artifacts, an old chiseled out canoe. Huge windows to see the turbines. Nice big fish viewing area.
This is the Washington side of the Bonneville dam and hydro power unit. This is relatively new compared to the Oregon side. Inside there are multiple levels to see. One of the buildings on first floor has educational content and generator viewing area. There is a theatre which play the history when it is open. The ground floor has access to fish ladders. All places have elevator access. There are tours at certain times a day and well worth it. It is about 45 minutes and they take you close to one of the generators to explain its working. Staff are generous and always ready with answers when needed.
The Bonneville Dam visitor center was completely free....and it had a... theater, Fish viewing center and more...Those points were my 9 year old daughter's key takeaways. I agree with them, and want to expand on the fish viewing-because of the time of year that we were there, there were lots of fish passing through and it was truly incredible to watch them pass by on their journeys. I could have spent hours just watching the fish! Highly recommend the visitor center for adults and kids alike!
Great place to take a break and stretch the legs on a long bike ride. Bathrooms, parking, and awesome views of the dam. Easy off-on exit from HWY 14. Worth the stop especially when the spillway is open. Thunderous and impressive.
